

John McDermott serves as managing director and chief enterprise risk officer for LPL Financial. In this role, Mr. McDermott is focused on optimizing resources dedicated to risk and compliance across the firm, building consistency, and continuing to strengthen all teams with a holistic and strategic approach. To that end, he is responsible for firm-wide risk management processes, including all regulatory compliance, internal audit, security and privacy, Sarbanes-Oxley controls, and other critical risk management functions. He also collaborates with the firm’s legal team and senior management to maintain and strengthen relationships with relevant regulatory bodies and the firm’s board of directors.
Prior to joining LPL Financial in 2009, Mr. McDermott worked for 35 years at Merrill Lynch, where he held a series of leadership roles including global head of compliance and internal audit. He began his career at Merrill Lynch as a staff attorney in the wealth management legal division before he rose to the role of vice president and senior counsel for Europe and Latin America after only four years. Subsequent roles included general counsel for Merrill Lynch’s operations in Japan, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and global head of capital markets compliance.
Mr. McDermott has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers University. He is a member of the New York and New Jersey Bar Associations and is Series 7, 14, and 24 registered.
